Let’s go through a list of problems and observations.
Before I start griping I want to point out how much I love this thing, it’s peppy, it’s got character, and it’s city sized. If you can get past the small similarities to a plymouth voyager in terms of looks then I would actually recommend a post Renix cherokee. The Renix Cherokees were the first of the XJ’s to offer the straight 6. they also grew to have some very interesting electrical quirks as well as they aged. Post Renix Cherokees gained a higher output 4.0 and improvements in safety and crash protection. the Renix years were from 87-91.
the 4WD is pressure actuated: I found this out when I got stuff in a mud hole because my front wheels wouldn’t engage. There are pressure lines that had removed themselves from the actuator and I have yet to see if replacing the hoses had fixed my problem.
Power/Comfort transmission setting: This is a very aggressive D/OD system that you should just leave in power mode. The comfort setting allows the system to purposely slip thus damaging your transmission. after a good grand of miles my power mode finally works and boy does it make a difference.
Rust: I just discovered a rusty floorpan, and the rockers. nothing new in VA.
JEEP: Just empty every pocket at the gas station.
It’s the living definition for “Rolling project”, but what isn’t at 29 years old ?

The front Dana is a vacuum disconnect too, my buddy got it put it on a switch after I think he welded up the front end so he could have left front wheel drove or both.

I have a fond memory of going for a drive with my mother in the family’s new XJ Sport. This was the first one we had with the Power/Comfort button. On a dirt road hill I reached over and pushed the button. “What does this do?” I think I caught my mom give a bit of counter steer. Yes, very aggressive.

As far as I understand, Renix refers to Renix Electronique, a Renault and Bendix joint-venture. They made engine electronics and control systems in the ‘80s, and AMC used their EFI systems in their cars (including the Cherokee).
The EFI system on the Cherokee was switched over to a Chrysler system sometime in the early ‘90s.

Don’t bother fixing the vacuum Central Axle Disconnect. It’ll fail again when you need it most. It smells fear. I fixed mine by removing the housing from the axle, sliding the shift fork and collar into the “engaged” position, then I drilled and tapped a hole in the housing and ran a bolt into it with silicone to seal it. Drill the housing hole so that the bolt will prevent the shift fork from “un-engaging”. Boom. $1.00 fix.
As an added bonus, the “Part Time” light is always on. Draw a “y” after “Part” so the light now says “Party Time”. Jeep always knows what time it is now.
